We saw yesterday that the disciples may have thought the world, as they knew it, was about to end when they ask the Lord Jesus the question in this verse:

Matt 24:3
3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? (KJV)

One has to wonder why the disciples would ask about the Lord’s coming when the Lord was already there. It seems obvious they understood that the coming of the Son of Man was going to be a grand a glorious event which was yet to come. The Lord had told them in Matthew 10:

Matt 10:23
23 "When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. (NKJ)

The disciples may have known what Daniel said about the coming of the Son of Man. In Daniel chapter 7, Daniel gave very specific information about the tribulation period and the fact that it would end with the coming of the Son of Man with the clouds of heaven.

Dan 7:13-14
13 "I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him.
14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed. (NKJ)

The Lord used similar terms as He described the coming of the Son of Man in Matthew 24.

Matt 24:29-30
29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30 "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (NKJ)

Knowing about this glorious coming of the Son of Man may have helped to ease the pain when the Lord revealed that He was going to be killed and raised again.

Matt 17:22-23
22 Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men,
23 "and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up." And they were exceedingly sorrowful. (NKJ)
